Criptid Fieldbook: Thunderbird by painted-wolfs-den Criptid Fieldbook: Thunderbird by painted-wolfs-den
This picture was done for Carnivore Games' RPG "The Unexplained" a paranormal adventure game. The players take on the roles of paranormal investigators and cryptozoologists as they try to prove or debunk whatever the GM throws at them.

The original concept for my illustrations was that they were going to look like pages scribbled in an investigators field notebook. With observations and identification notes added by the researcher. Unfortunately that didn't work out in the layout process and the images were edited for the final product.

This one has a typo that was amended for the final version. Typos, while common in the real world (especially for me!), aren't great for published products.

I can't thank Carnivore Games enough for the opportunity to work for them!

Oh wow! If this was real I'd be quite scared as I'm sure it's insanely dangerous...

still wouldn't stop me from being amazed at how large it is...
how tall is it?

I'm not exactly sure... I don't remember hearing any height estimates.

My guess is that it would be around 3-4 ft tall.

hmm... seems a bit small to me...
There's actually real birds that are very close to that size (except in wingspan of course :P)

Well, as you increase body mass you need to substantially increase wing area, unless you "cheat" and use ocean dynamics.

Since this is a raptor, I kept the body proportions roughly the same as an Eagle or Condor.
